Applied Consumer Technology
Why study Applied Consumer Technology?
The ACT department has a strong sustainable focus along with providing a supportive environment and an exciting learning journey. We equip students with life skills for the future that link to extensive career opportunities through four separate subjects including; Fashion and Textiles, Food Technology, Hospitality, and Food and Nutrition.
Fashion and Textiles - Students investigate the technology process and how it applies to Fashion and Textiles. They learn essential sewing skills along with the opportunity to apply their own creativity to a textile item and make a wearable garment. Skills are developed and extended from the junior through to the senior school.
Food Technology - Year 9 and 10 students explore the relationship between technology practices, food and nutrition research and the development of nutritious food products in a practical setting including using produce from our Māra Kai (school garden). They investigate food products and the impact of people’s food choices on their health.
Food and Nutrition - Year 11 to 13 students learn a range of health and wellbeing including how to analyse the relationship between wellbeing, food sustainability, determinants of health, health promotion, nutritional issues and the impact of food choices and eating patterns on society.
Hospitality - Year 11 to 13 students learn essential food handling and preparation skills from foundation cookery through to espresso making, front of house service and more complex meal preparation.
Embedded within all our subject courses are three chosen tikanga: Whanaungatanga - working together; Manaakitanga - showing respect, kindness and generosity; and Kotahitanga - working in unity with collective action.
