Course Description

What will I learn?
You will advance your skills in: creating narratives and devising; using acting techniques; and performing with confidence. You will also reflect on and analyse a range of live performances and develop your critical thinking. You will work collaboratively to experience the production process and develop your leadership and organisational skills, with high value placed on whanaungatanga and manaakitanga.
Where does it lead?
This is a University Entrance approved course which leads to a range of post school options in terms of training, study or careers. Also, you can sit scholarship Drama if you wish; it is performance based.
Studying Drama leads directly into the performing arts, communication and entertainment industries. It also leads into careers requiring creativity, confidence leadership, problem solving and people skills.
Course Outline:
Devising AS 91513 - 3.2 “Herstory” (5 credits) Internal. You will devise, script and perform a play on a current NZ issue, with the intention of provoking your audience to action.
Acting Performance AS 91512 - 3.1 “Te Mana O Reo” (4 credits) Internal. You will interpret a text and integrate Drama techniques to communicate the text in a performance.
Examination AS 91514 - 3.3 “Kia Ora” (4 credits) External. You will demonstrate knowledge of a theatre genre by analysing and interpreting one text in an examination.
Major Production AS 91517 - 3.6 “No Small Parts” (5 credits) Internal. You will research, participate in the production process, and perform a significant acting role for an evening performance.
Examination AS 91518 – 3.7 “Fourth Wall Removed” (4 credits) External. You will analyse Drama processes in a live theatre context in an examination.
What should I have already done?
It is strongly recommended that you have studied Year 12 Drama and have the skills to learn lines and work as part of a team.
Course Contribution
Attendance at a live theatre performance selected by your teacher is highly recommended as this is used for the examination. Cost will vary according to the play performance.
Pathway
Any career that requires confidence, people skills and the ability to work in a team. In particular acting and performance based careers but also aligned areas in the arts generally such as front of house and technical support for the arts.
