Year 11 Dance
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mrs T. Price.
You will develop performance and technical skills across a range of dance genres that are of interest to you and will apply choreographic processes and principles to create dance sequences in response to given briefs. You will build upon your prior knowledge by exploring and investigating the background and context of a range of dance genres. You will develop literacy in Dance by viewing and responding to a range of dance works. There is emphasis on self-direction, wellbeing and creative risk-taking.
Where does it lead? L1DAN leads to L2DAN and develops skills needed for any career involving leadership, creativity, problem solving and collaboration.
Course Overview
Term 1
Students will learn about New Zealand's longest running Māori contemporary dance company, Black Grace, and its founder and artistic director, Neil Ieremia. Students will learn about the contribution Ieremia has made to the development of dance in Aotearoa, and use one of his established works, Method, as an artistic model on which to create their own choreography.
Students will also complete performance work in a genre of their own choice.
Term 2
Students will learn about Touch Compass, Aotearoa's leading professional arts organisation whose work is disability-led. Students will consider their own biases towards dance as well as their own limitations. They will complete choreographic research and create their own work exploring accessibility issues in dance.
Students will also complete performance work in a genre of their own choice.
Term 3
Students will study a professional established dance work created by the New Zealand Dance Company. They will learn to analyse and write about professional dance. This will culminate in a written examination.
Students will also complete performance work in a genre of their own choice.
Term 4
Students will learn a range of choreographic processes in preparation for NCEA Level 2. They will also be able to explore their own interests using an inquiry-based approach.
What should I have already done?
While some prior knowledge of dance is recommended (eg. 9DAN, 10DAN or experience at a dance studio), if you have a genuine interest in participating in Dance, and a willingness to work collaboratively, you will be able to progress your learning.
