Course Overview
Term 1
Students will complete research into prolific hip hop choreographer, Paris Goebel. They will learn about her contribution to the development of dance in Aotearoa. Students will increase their practical knowledge by participating in hip hop, and learn some hip hop choreographic techniques. The first half of the semester culminates in a hip hop performance.
Term 2
During the second half of the semester, students learn about Moss Patterson, a key Māori contemporary choreographer, who is currently Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the New Zealand Dance Company. Students will learn how kōwhaiwhai patterns in local landmarks can be used as a choreographic stimulus. Students will work collaboratively in small groups to choreograph a sequence of dance.
Students will learn how contemporary and hip hop dance can be fused to find new ways of exploring dance. They will analyse a professional dance, Vertikal, choreographed by French choreographer, Mourad Merzouki that successfully fuses these movement methodologies.
What should I have already done?
